How to pack for a 7-day Hawaii Vacation (with a Toddler!)
We’re so excited for our first trip (post-covid lockdown) and we’re heading to Oahu, Hawaii for 7 days! The last time we traveled on a plane, Willow was 6-months old, and back then, she needed more baby supplies in comparison to her being a 2-year old toddler now.
I honestly didn’t have a clue back then on how to “pack smart” with a 6-month old, so I literally packed everything. From a whole pack of diapers, to blankets, bottles, formula, 30 pairs of clothes, a baby monitor, and the list goes on. I can’t remember if we ended up checking in our bags, but what I learned from our first trip with Willow, is that you can literally purchase most things at your destination, especially if you’re traveling domestically. Duh, right? I know.
I’m the type of person who likes to create a travel itinerary, a packing list, and research all the gluten-free-friendly restaurants ahead of time. I’ve always been this way and I don’t think that will ever change! Yes, it’s called “type-A” personality, and I’ve learned to embrace that shit. But over the years I’ve learned to let go a little and let others plan things for the trip or we divide and conquer planning certain parts. It definitely makes it easier for me and lowers the burden and stress of planning – especially if I’m traveling with my family.
And with all that said, for this 7-day Hawaii trip, I told myself I wasn’t going to overpack, and that we will be carrying EVERYTHING on the plane. I ended up packing 5 days before our trip, which means I spent several days doing laundry, to ensure everything was sorted and organized. The day before our trip I went through my luggage, and took out the items I didn’t think I would use, extra tank tops, extra workout clothes, toiletries, etc. And everything fit neatly between 2 carry-on luggages and 2 backpacks. Yes, it’s possible, friends!
And without further ado, check out my 7-day Hawaii packing list below!

7-Day Hawaii Packing List + Tips (for 2 adults and 1 toddler)
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
- TSA Pre-check – It will save you so much time and energy getting through the security line at the airport. Sign up ASAP if you don’t already have it HERE.
- Know and understand the Hawaii government guidelines and requirements for quarantining when you arrive, take a covid test 72 hours before you fly to Hawaii, and all the forms you’ll need to complete when you get on the plane. Go to https://hawaiicovid19.com/travel/getting-to-hawaii/ for more information.
- Check the weather during the time of your stay, so you can pack clothing and shoes accordingly.
- Figure out what types of activities you plan to do during your trip. We will usually plan a few hikes during our trip to Hawaii, so I usually bring long workout pants, a sports bra, tank top, and the appropriate sneakers.
- Check hotel amenities – if you plan to spend time at the beach and pool, check in with the hotel to see what types of amenities they offer so you don’t have to pack that beach towel, chairs, tents, or toiletries..
- If you’re traveling in a large group, make restaurant reservations ahead of time.
PACKING SUPPLIES
- Packing cubes will save you space in your luggage and keep things organized.
- For toiletries, pack only the essentials in 3.5 oz travel-size containers (i.e. lotion, toothpaste, face wash, body wash, shampoo and conditioner, etc.) – if you run out, you can always head to your local grocery or drug store to buy more!
- Diapers: Pack 10 diapers and a package of wipes. Look for the nearest Target or Walmart and buy a new package of diapers when you get there. Trust me, you don’t want to waste any space in your luggage for this.
- Sunscreen: No you cannot pack a full-size bottle in your carry-on luggage – pack a travel size bottle and buy more during your Target or Walmart run when you arrive.
- Pack light and airy clothing, because tropical 80F degree weather and this will allow for more space in your packing cubes.
- Roll your clothes to save space! Here’s a cool video on how to fold clothes for packing.
